The SAPIENT project (Situation-Aware Protocols in Edge Network Technologies) aimed to improve the performance of network applications specifically in wireless networks by examining both the traffic on a network and the real-time characteristics of the network.  By being aware of the different network flows and the  state of the network, SAPIENT can  shape the traffic on the network on a per-flow basis, improving the performance of the applications on the network.  The SAPIENT project was a DARPA funded project undertaken by Drexel University in conjuction with Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Labs (ATL) in Camden, NJ.
